After Rome, it is the largest municipality in the province.
Isola Sacra is home to the excavations of an ancient Roman necropolis, the Necropolis of Portus, with several very well-preserved mosaics and painted, mosaic or stucco decorations. Near the Fiumicino Canal, once known as the Fossa Traiana, you can visit the remains of the early Christian Basilica of Sant'Ippolito. Along Via Portuense, you can visit what remains of the Castle of Porto. Opposite it is the archaeological site of the Port of Trajan.
Near the airport is the Museum of Roman Ships, which houses five Roman ships discovered in the port of Claudius during construction of the airport. The Municipality of Fiumicino lies within the Roman Coast Nature Reserve, which it manages jointly with the Municipality of Rome in its respective area. Between the towns of Focene and Fregene is an important protected area managed by WWF, known as the Macchiagrande Oasis.
